A Brief Overview
Works as a member of the Radiation Therapy planning team. Works closely with the Radiation Oncologists and Medical Physics to generate treatment planning techniques and radiation dose distributions. Is familiar with the physical and geometric characteristics for radiation equipment and radioactive source commonly used in Radiation Oncology.

What you will do

  • Follows the dose prescription given by the Radiation Oncologist, assists in contouring critical structures, and plans a treatment technique using the Eclipse treatment planning computer that will deliver a high radiation dose to tumor volume while protecting sensitive structures around it.
  • Verify and review radiology reports with Radiation Oncologist.
  • Collaborates with the therapist in the simulation and CT simulation processes
  • Verifies the accurate input of patient information into the ARIA information system.
  • Assists in preparation of molds, casts and other immobilization devices.
  • Assists technical staff in implementation of treatment plan - correct use of immobilization devices, beam modifying devices, field arrangement.
  • Performs annual quality assurance on treatment planning computer.
  • Observes and practices radiation safety procedures for patients and personnel.
  • Perform treatment planning for Rapid Arc and IMRT patients on Eclipse, including prostate, complex head and neck (dose painted), gated lung, abdomen, pancreas, and skin cancers.
  • Perform 3D treatment planning on Varian Eclipse and perform all calculations to verify plans.
  • Perform Stereotactic Radiosurgery treatment planning.
  • Perform Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy treatment planning for Lung and Spinal Lesions.
  • Responsible for verifying information in ARIA.
  • Responsible for entering fields to be used for IGRT on all treatment machines in ARIA.
  • Responsible for setting patients up in CT simulator.
  • Perform fusion for radiation therapy patients using Velocity image registration program.
  • Performs smart segmentation and contouring at the request of the Radiation Oncologist.
  • Involved in simulations of complex patients such as IMRT patients.
  • Supervise technical staff in implementation of complex treatment plans.
  • Assists with completion of pre-certification forms for insurance companies and provides support of medical necessity with proper documentation.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to operate ARIA information.
  • Participates in the departmental and HNH Performance Improvement Programs.
  • Keeps abreast on new treatment planning techniques.
  • Train Bergen Community College Radiation Therapy students during their clinical rotations.
  • Works largely independently.
  • Performs all duties as assigned



Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in physical or biological sciences with the on-the-job training in dosimetry for 12 months Required


Experience Qualifications

  • 1-3 years one additional year of practical supervised experience in radiation dosimetry. Required and
  • 1-3 years 2 years clinical experience as a therapist Required

Licenses and Certifications

  • RAD THER - Radiation Therapist, Registered A certified medical dosimetrist or a registered Radiation Therapist with on-the-job training in dosimetry for 12 months Upon Hire Required
