A Brief Overview

The unit secretary & PCT t functions under the direction of the professional nurse; performs specific duties necessary for the support of nursing care and reports all observations and results to the RN. The unit secretary & PCT assists the nursing staff by performing clerical duties relative to the functioning of the Nursing Unit.


What you will do

  • Performs basic patient care procedures as delegated under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Reports pertinent observations to the RN.
  • Takes patient's vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure and patient identified pain score. Maintains accurate Intake and Output on patients as assigned
  • Assists with personal hygiene care for patients: provides complete and partial bed baths, assists patients with tub baths and showers, provides PM Care, incontinence skin care assists with care of hair and nails, assists with shampoos as ordered and shaving provides skin care and back rubs and makes occupied and unoccupied beds
  • Assists patients with their meals and feeds patients who are unable to feed themselves. Distributes additional nutrition and drinking water.
  • Obtains routine specimens of urine, sputum and feces.
  • Performs treatments such as Enemas, Ice Collar, Sitz Baths, Perineal Care, Foley Catheter Care, SCD boots and TEDs as per RN instruction. Assist RN with cardiac monitor leads and pulse oximetry placement as directed
  • Performs CPR
  • Empties drainage bags/canisters, measures contents and records on I&O
  • Assists with post-mortem care.
  • Assists patients getting into or out of bed: assist patients in walking, able to use safe lift equipment. Assists in positioning patients.
  • Assists in restraining patients as ordered by the physician and directed by RN
  • Cleans and organizes bedside units, utility rooms, nourishment areas, and nurses’ station. Cleans and cares for unit equipment.
  • Assists the Unit Director/ Clinical Coordinator and/or Charge Nurse in the effective and efficient functioning of the nursing unit including coordination of information, unit organization and communication with other departments and physicians. Checks Unit Inventories, storeroom, and other supplies and places orders as indicated by the Unit Director.
  • Transcribes patient care orders into the computer
  • Assembles and prepares for admissions/transfers: new charts, work sheets, etc.; stamps charts on admission/transfer; completes all clerical admission and discharge paper work. Assesses charts routinely for: correct order of sheets, stamping of all chart sheets with correct patient I.D., chart dividers.
  • Ensures charts are completed; content is in proper sequence and placed in appropriate area for Health Information Services pick-up upon patient discharge or when chart is thinned.
  • Assists patients with requests that pertain to clerical functions i.e.: telephone, TV request.
  • Answers telephone; takes and relays messages; provides information as appropriate
  • Answers Call Light System and immediately refers to RN.
  • Coordinates patient transport to and from special tests, procedures, and discharges.


Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma graduate or equivalent. Required and
  • Bachelor's Degree One year of college or business school Required


Experience Qualifications

  • Prefer one to two years of experience within healthcare Required


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • All are expected to participate in the patient care technician course given at the hospital and successfully pass the patient care technician exam.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and office equipment; computer-literate.
