A Brief Overview
The Paramedic represents Holy Name Hospital and the Holy Name ER Physicians in the community by providing state-of-the-art, pre-hospital care in accordance with the philosophies and practices of Holy Name Hospital's Mobile Intensive Care Program and the New Jersey State Department of Health statutes and regulations.
What you will do
- Assumes charge responsibilities in the field including the organization of patient care and scene control.
- Serves as a patient advocate.
- Responsible for assessing scene safety prior to entering, including observing for any potential hazards and utilizes protective clothing and equipment as necessary.
- Obtains pertinent data from patients, families, bystanders, and/or identification found on patient.
- Observes, records, and reports patient’s symptoms, activity, reactions, and any changes in patient’s condition utilizing specific assessment techniques.
- Supervises Basic Life Support in the provisions of care to patients requiring Advanced Life Support.
- Performs critical care, Advanced Life Support, treatment modalities, special procedures, etc., as ordered by the Base Physician or per standing orders in cases of radio failure according to NJ Department of Health standards and the Holy Name Hospital policies and Procedures.
- Appropriately uses standing orders in the delivery of patient’s care as per NJ 8:41-10.1 thru 10.13.
- Appropriately treats patients during periods of radio failure as per 8:41-3.8.
- Performs duties within scope of practice as defined in 8:41-4.17.
- Performs approved skills and procedures as per 8:31-7-2.
- Assesses equipment for effectiveness and recommends changes as needed.
- Maintains equipment in clean, safe and proper working order.
- Performs equipment, medication, and supplies inventory at the beginning of each shift, noting any problems on the vehicle checksheet.
- Properly identifies and disposes of all waste materials.
- Maintains controlled substances count, documents usage, waste and expirations in Narcotic log
- Operates MICU vehicles in a safe and responsible manner at all times, including the appropriate use of emergency lights and sirens as per 8:41-3.9.
- Shares with the Coordinator and /or Clinical Supervisor, the responsibility of orientation of new employees.
- Provides in-service education to BLS, police, fire, rescue, nursing and others as required.
- Performs, when necessary, any of the approved MICU procedures within the ER in an emergency situation under the direction of the physician.
- Represents Holy Name Hospital by participating in public relations programs as requested.
- Performs additional appropriate duties as assigned by the Coordinator.
- Demonstrates ability to properly carry patients, equipment etc.
- Accurately documents patient assessment, treatment and response. Provides oral and written reports to Holy Name Hospital Medical Control and the receiving hospital.
- Keeps accurate records of all dispatched calls on daily log.
- Obtains dispositions on all patients seen by MICU.
- Orders, stocks and keeps records of supplies received through Pharmacy, Storeroom etc.
- Keeps an up-to-date log of skills and CEU’s as required by OEMS and submits data to the Clinical Supervisor for the timely recertification.
- Maintains a positive, professional image.
- Participates effectively in evaluation procedures by providing data for assessment of clinical performance.
- Participates in formal self-evaluation by identifying areas of strength and limitation.
- Seeks supervision of own actions, where appropriate.
- Plans and participates in education programs and workshops to increase professional competency and meet personnel and professional goals.
- Understands legal consequences associated with Emergency Medical Services.
- Identifies unsafe patient care practices and assumes responsibility for intervention.
- Actively participates on committees as requested.
- Functions as a positive role model.
- Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Job performance requires extensive standing, walking, with some bending, lifting.

Education Qualifications
- High School Degree or equivalent experience Required
Experience Qualifications
- Prior experience in patient evaluation and care is required along with equipment maintenance procedures. Required and
- Prior hospital EMS experience Preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Qualified candidates will possess strong interpersonal and communications skills as well as effective and proper documentation experience.
Licenses and Certifications
- Current NJ MICP/MICN Certification Upon Hire Required and
- BCLS - Basic Life Support - AHA Upon Hire Required and
- ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support - AHA Upon Hire Required and
- DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State A valid Driver’s License is required and must be maintained Upon Hire Required and
- Must maintain current MICP/MICN Certifications Upon Hire Required and
- Professional Rescuer AHA CPR Upon Hire Required and
- AHA-ACLS skill review bi-annually Upon Hire Required and
- AHA ALS CEU 48 hours bi-annually Upon Hire Required
