A Brief Overview

Directs and monitors the daily activities of the Clinical Engineering Department.


What you will do

  • Defines, implements and administers a comprehensive clinical engineering program to maintain equipment in accordance with applicable regulations and standards.
  • Participates in long-range planning for hospital equipment. Provides technical assistance and expertise when determining the acquisitions of new medical equipment
  • Manages inventory of clincial equipment at all offsite locations
  • Establishes and maintains test specifications for clinical equipment. Ensures that all requirements for the preventive maintainence for equipment is completed with manufacturer recommendations and according to regulation guidelines.
  • Manages staff to ensure prompt, appropriate and cost effective repairs.
  • Ensures that accurate, current and complete equipment records are maintained for all biomedical equipment.
  • Effectively interprets policies, standards and codes dealing with equipment systems.
  • Develops appropriate in-service training programs on the safe and proper use and application of clinical instruments.
  • Maintains the software system for tracking and documenting all hazard alerts and recalls related to biomedical equipment.
  • Initiates investigation of medical device incidents as outlined by the Safe Medical Device Act.
  • Completes assignments in a timely manner, thoroughly and appropriately detailed.
  • Effectively directs the receiving, storage and inventory control function of the department.
  • Directs and monitors the day to day operations and functions of the Clinical Engineering staff in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Effectively supervises the Clinical Engineering staff. Ensures that criteria-based performance evaluations are completed in a timely manner according to Hospital policy. Conducts progressive discipline in a timely and appropriate manner according to Hospital policy.
  • Maintains effective communication with assigned staff members to provide for effective problem resolution.
  • Trains department staff according to Hospital policy. Validates job proficiency on an annual basis. Maintains complete department training records.
  • Ensures staff attendance at mandatory education seminars. Verifies their understanding of fire, safety and infection control guidelines.
  • Maintains a safe working environment.
  • Routinely utilizes policy and procedure manuals and other available reference materials to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Maintains and respects staff and patient confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively represent the hospital and department at internal and outside meetings.
  • Inspires confidence of employees and management team by remaining well informed, listening with an open mind and communicating in a highly professional manner.
  • Actively contributes to and participates on various committees.
  • Ensures that department staff promptly responds to equipment concerns and questions on a timely basis.
  • Establishes a collaborative effective working relationship with members of the management team constantly striving for the overall success of the Hospital.
  • Researches special and alternative programs and/or options to reduce cost on a regular basis.
  • Designs and maintains a cost-effective departmental budget on an annual basis.
  • Demonstrates the ability to plan and organize the daily operational duties using supportive personnel to maximum cost-effective efficiency.
  • Seeks opportunities to further refine expertise in areas of responsibility. Keeps abreast of technical and legal developments.
  • Participates in professional organizations.
  • Performs all duties as assigned


Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree BS degree required in Biomedical or Electrical Engineering required
  • Master's Degree preferred


Experience Qualifications

  • 4-6 years of progressively responsible Clinical Engineering experience, with at least two years of management experience. required


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have analytical and problem solving ability


Licenses and Certifications

  • Certification by the International Certification Commission in Clinical Engineering upon hire preferred
