We understand your interest in specific units. While we'll do our best to honor your preferences, final placements may vary based on operational needs. Students will be notified of their designated units prior to the start of the externship program.  
  • Student Externship Program: Monday, May 19, 2025 through Saturday, July 19, 2025
  • Vacation time will not be available during the 9-week externship program  
  • 1 week of clinical orientation 
  • 12 hour shifts, rotating schedules, weekend requirements 
A Brief Overview

The Student Nurse Extern (SNE) role is designed to provide a paid learning opportunity for students as they progress in their career as a Registered Nurse (RN). The SNE provides basic care under the direction of the RN further enhancing their basic clinical skills and knowledge of patient care while contributing the efforts of the healthcare team. SNEs promote a positive patient experience by partnering with the patient, family and other health care providers to provide excellence in customer service and assistance with basic daily living activities and comfort measures. The SNE assists other health care providers with safe, age appropriate and culturally competent care by performing basic patient care functions; i.e. ambulation, vital signs, transporting patients, equipment and supplies, and other duties under the supervision of an RN.


What you will do
  • The SNE assists other health care providers with safe, age appropriate and culturally competent care by performing basic patient care functions; i.e. activities of daily living (ADLs), ambulation, vital signs, transporting supplies/equipment/patient medications and other duties deemed necessary and according to their training. 
  • Function as a member of the nursing team. 
  • Administer medications directly under the supervision of the RN. 
  • Implement infection prevention and wound prevention/care strategies. 
  • Conduct patient assessments and related documentation under the supervision of the RN. 
  • Reinforce patient teaching. 
  • Assist RN and the healthcare team with other bedside procedures as assigned and supervised by the RN. 
  • Participates actively in patient safety; i.e. hourly rounds, answering call lights. 
  • Perform point-of-care testing; i.e. blood glucose, EKG. 
  • Assist in emergency resuscitative procedures as directed by the RN. 

Education Qualifications
  • Enrolled in a Registered Nurse program at an accredited pre-licensure nursing school with a GPA greater than 3.0. Required 
Experience Qualifications
  • 1-3 years Minimum one semester of clinical experience as part of the RN pre-licensure program. Required 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment which requires multi-tasking activities and ongoing communication with the registered nurse. 

Licenses and Certifications
  • BLS - Basic Life Support current American Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider certification Upon Hire Required
