A Brief Overview

Assists in the coordination of the clinical and leadership activities of the Nursing Unit. Collaborates with the Unit Directors in developing, assessing, planning, implementing, directing, and evaluating patient care.


What you will do

  • Identifies staff educational needs and functions as a clinical resource/role model for nursing personnel
  • Coordinates orientation of nursing employees on specific shift
  • Oversee unit-based preceptor program
  • Participates in the interviewing and hiring of new staff members
  • Participates and involves nursing staff in evaluative nursing research and or performance improvement activities
  • Utilizes evidence-based practice and current research in the development of procedures and protocols
  • Provides for a positive environment for nursing staff
  • Demonstrates knowledge of conflict resolution
  • Assists Nurse Manager/Director with criteria based performance evaluations and competency assessments
  • Addresses shift-specific matters via staff meetings to further enhance communication and identify areas of concern
  • Demonstrates effective communication with other departments
  • Responds to identified concerns of patients, physicians, and visitors. Communicates intervention to Nurse Manager/Director
  • Manages a patient case load when unit activity indicates
  • Collaborates with Nurse Manager/Director in monitoring patient acuities
  • Budget accountability regarding staffing/supplies
  • Makes staff assignments appropriately based on patient care needs and competency level of staff
  • Develops intended outcomes for nursing care and patient education plans based on a needs assessment and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Provides follow-up supervision to ensure the completion of all patient care assignments
  • Follows process for progressive discipline in consultation with Nurse Manager/Director
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for unit functioning in the absence of the Nurse Manager
  • Provides input regarding updating and revising policies, procedures, goals, and objectives
  • Competent in organizational skills to facilitate the delivery of care
  • Demonstrates a proactive attitude by anticipating potential problem situations and appropriately intervenes
  • Seeks opportunities to further own knowledge in areas of responsibility
  • Mentor staff with regard to development of critical thinking skills
  • Participates in professional organizations, education seminars and projects related to area of expertise
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Performs related duties as assigned


Education Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing Required and
  • Bachelor's Degree BSN Preferred


Experience Qualifications

  • Previous leadership role Preferred and
  • 4-6 years Three plus years of specialty experience Preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Current NJ License Upon Hire Required
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support BLS through American Heart Association Upon Hire Required
  • National certification related to specialty area Upon Hire Preferred
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support May be required dependent on specialty area
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support May be required dependent on specialty area
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation May be required dependent on specialty area
