A Brief Overview

Under the supervision and guidance of the Administrative Director for Laboratory Services: This position is responsible for coordinating, training and overseeing phlebotomy services for the inpatient and outpatient services.


What you will do

  • Oversees the daily phlebotomy operation and ensures that all venipunctures are performed safely, efficiently and in line with best practices
  • Coordinates of phlebotomy staff schedules and ensures adequate coverage for all shifts.
  • Ensures that all procedures comply with safety standards and infection prevention guidelines
  • Monitors and manages phlebotomy supplies and equipment
  • Acts as the point of contact between phlebotomy staff, nursing and medical staff
  • Trains new hires in phlebotomy techniques, patient care, and safety and infection prevention guidelines
  • Offers guidance and mentorship to the phlebotomy staff and assists with complex procedures
  • Performs venipunctures as needed to assist the phlebotomy staff
  • Ensures all blood samples are collected, labeled and handled properly
  • Works closely with phlebotomy programs from affiliated schools
  • Develops and updates training manuals and maintains compliance with accrediting agencies
  • Evaluates staff performance, conducts assessments and assures that all phlebotomists meet the necessary requirements
  • Collaborates with Nursing on processes and responds to inquiries and concerns
  • All other duties as assigned


Education Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree Associate degree in laboratory science preferred
  • High School Diploma required


Experience Qualifications

  • At least three years of experience as a phlebotomist coordinator/trainer required
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring phlebotomists required
  • Proven experience in developing training programs for phlebotomy required
  • Extensive experience and knowledge of phlebotomy techniques including venipunctures on adults, children and babies required


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to direct, lead and communicate effectively with phlebotomists, the laboratory, nursing and medical staff
  • Stays up to date with the latest trends and innovations in phlebotomy


Licenses and Certifications

  • PHEL - Phlebotomy Trained PBT(ASCP) upon hire required or
  • CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification NHA or NPA upon hire required
  • Phlebotomy Instructor Certification upon hire preferred
